Benjamin is a 3 (almost 4) year old funny, happy, loving boy and older brother who has been struggling for the last two years with what we now know is Autism.

Despite all the wonderful things about him, everyday and night is a struggle. We are lucky to get him to sleep for four hours a night. I, his mom, have to go in and lay with him to even get him to bed at that beginning of the night. Not only do we fight with sleep, but he doesn't eat much which is making it hard to make sure he gets the nutrients and vitamins his body needs. Currently, he has very very limited communication skills and because of this he screams whenever he is frustrated (and its a loud high pitched scream). We are trying to teach him some sign language along with focusing on using the limited words he does know so he doesn't get so frustrated and scream and or cause injury to himself. Lastly, Ben has no fear causing his father and I lots for him. He will run away from us and run into the road before one of us can catch him and he tends to wander and if he were to wander too far before my husband and I were able to catch him he wouldn't know how to get back. For example, we recently moved into our current home and he got outside in the middle of winter and we didn't realize it right away and he had no shoes or jacket on. As soon as we realized it a few seconds later we went outside and told him he needed to come back inside because it was too cold to be out there (but he didn't understand) so we decided to see if he would go inside once he started getting really cold. So we stood out there with him, and after a few minutes he didn't and his skin was starting to turn red (because of being cold) and we dragged him in and that day my husband and I realized that if he ever got out in the cold or really warm he wouldn't understand when he would need to go in which could cause some serious medical issues.

Having a service dog would do tremendous things for Ben and our family. It would help Ben communicate to us and others what he needs/wants and he wouldn't feel so alone and scream. One of the biggest things it would do is keep Ben safe (and help us with some piece of mind) because it would prevent him from wandering off and either getting lost, running out in to the road, and or being injured because he doesn't understand the dangers associated with some activities. A third thing it would also help break out of his shell and be more willingly to socialize with others. Another thing the dog would do is disrupt the behaviors that send Ben into being overwhelmed and provide a distraction to help him deal with situations better. Lastly, it would help Ben come out of these overwhelmed episodes quicker because the dog would be able to provide deep pressure.

Hunter is 8 years old and has been diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder), a high functioning form of Autism, bipolar, and ADHD.

Underneath the unforgettable freckles, smile, and outgoing personality, Hunter has issues that go very deep. A service dog will allow him to be accepted by other children and be a friend to him when he feels like he has none. A service dog will also help me to keep Hunter safe from strangers and teach him approporaite boundaries. His dog will also be able to sleep with him to ease his paranoia of the snowman.

Zachary is a lovable 9 year old boy who is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his new companion. Zachary is non-verbal, but has been working on many new signs to help him communicate. He has a great smile and the bluest of eyes. Zach struggles with many of the classic Autistic behaviors such as "stimming" (repetitive behaviors such as hand flapping), routine behavior, self-injury (especially when he cannot communicate his needs or wants) and wandering. Zach's service dog will be trained to interrupt such behaviors and provide distractions, deep pressure and alerting others to dangers that Zach cannot verbally communicate. Andrew is a 12 year old funny, loving boy who has struggled with autism his entire life. Despite his many wonderful qualities, he has significant difficulties with socialization and making friends. Every single day is a struggle and will continue to be for the rest of his life. There is no cure for autism. All we can hope is for Andrew to feel comfortable being who he is, to help others understand and to find unique ways to improve Andrew’s quality of life.

Andrew loves animals! He has had cats, bunnies, fish and dogs. He even once caught a mouse in the house and tried to protect it from the cat!! One of Andrew’s greatest strengths is his ability to connect with animals. Having a service dog join our family would be the gift of a lifetime!
